FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

Yes. A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a regulated healthcare professional required to follow the highest standards of education, training, and ethics. Contrary to the title “nutritionist” which is self-proclaimed, RD is protected by law and ensures the information you are receiving is accurate and safe. All dietitians are nutritionists but not all nutritionists are dietitians.

What is a certified diabetes educator?

What is a certified diabetes educator?

A Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) is a licensed healthcare professional (e.g. dietitian, registered nurse, pharmacist) who has passed the Canadian Diabetes Educator’s Certification Board (CDECB) exam and continues to maintain sound knowledge and skills in diabetes care/management.

Are dietitian services covered by insurance plans?

Many health insurance plans and extended healthcare benefits offer dietitian and/or nutritionist coverage upward of $500 per calendar year. Please check with your insurance provider to find out details about your coverage. Although direct billing is not available, a detailed receipt will be provided after each session to support your insurance claim.

Do I need a physician referral to work with you?

No. A referral from a physician is not required and/or necessary. However, if interdisciplinary support is of benefit to you and your care, written consent can be provided to grant communication with your physician, psychotherapist, or any other health professional within the circle of care.

Why do you only offer packaged sessions?

Likewise to strength or endurance training, our bodies and minds don’t magically change overnight. Habits and behaviours require commitment and consistency. Hence, packaged sessions ensure that you receive the best overall care to reach your goal(s). Longer term support and accountability simply maximize your chance of success!
